Giant Anteater, Zoo Parc Overloon I've waited close to an hour for this giant anteater to get outside in this zoo. Unfortunately, it only briefly appeared and several things blocked my view, so this poor shot is all I have. I am truly intrigued by this mammal, it is one of few mammal species that I experience as "alien", so weird that you can't keep your eyes of it. And, it really is very large. 1. Oh how I would love to see one of these in the wild. Your patience was rewarded, even this glimpse would have been enough for me, thanks for sharing with us Ferdy! Posted 11 years ago
    1. Thanks Claire. We did see this smaller species in the wild in Brazil:

Southern Tamandua closeup We were able to approach this Anteater quite closely as it doesn't seem to see and hear very good when its busy sniffing the earth in search of food. Don't be fooled by its cuteness though, they have nasty long claws that can cut you wide open. Anteater,Brazil,Pantanal,Southern Tamandua,Tamandua tetradactyla

  2. Another one I missed in the Pantanal. However, by all reports they are very difficult to see in the wild. Posted 8 years ago
