Mating Calls | Photinus pyralis
Over at Scientific American, photographer Alex Wild's
discussing some of the techniques used
to photograph fireflies.
I'm knee-deep in fireflies every evening now,
working on my firefly book, which will be published in 2016.
I'm working with video as much as still imaging,
here's a still from one of my videos.
"A mating call heard in the secret compartment
between flashes, trembling wings
whisper the day's end."

''Photinus pyralis'', known by the common names common eastern firefly and big dipper firefly, is the most common species of firefly in North America. This organism is sometimes incorrectly classified as ''Photuris pyralis'', which likely results from mistaking the similar sounding genus ''Photuris''.
