  2. Ahhh Im not too hot on identifying species.lol. I just called it Common Butterfly and it came up with that.

    It was an injured Butterfly in the backyard the other morning.

    1. We try to identify the species the best we can, we don't just call them... If you don't know it just leave it blank, someone else will probably identify it for you. Knowing the location helps narrow down the search as different species are found in different regions.
      This looks better - I was hesitating between Papilio cresphontes and Papilio thoas, they are very similar.

  3. Yeah I did a search on Butterflies common to San Antonio and got a list and google image searched them referencing the wing decoration and front color schemes and got the right one pretty quickly. Posted 11 years ago

The giant swallowtail is the largest butterfly in North America. It is abundant through many parts of eastern North America; populations from western North America and down into Panama are now considered to belong to a different species, "Papilio rumiko".
