  1. If this photo was taken in Gir forest, is there a possibility that this is an Asiatic lion? I know that Gir has the largest known population of Asiatics even though it is still small. Asiatic lions have a fold of skin running along their belly which appears to be visible here. Also the colouring looks about right, or am I just being hopeful? Posted 11 years ago

The lion is one of the five big cats in the genus "Panthera" and a member of the family Felidae. The commonly used term African lion collectively denotes the several subspecies found in Africa. With some males exceeding 250 kg in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger.
