This fellow came to visit us a few months ago and posed ever so nicely for me. Species was incorrectly identified and is now correct

  1. I looked in my snake book and you are probably correct - a Kalahari Sand Snake. I have sent the pic to a snake FB page just to make sure. I was told it's a Skaapsteker when I described it to people in the area. When I get an ID from the snake people will change it. Thank you for letting me know :) It does say that the skaapsteker is sometimes mistaken for the Sand Snake Posted 11 years ago
    1. From the photos I found in the net, the Skaapsteker has a thin dorsal stripe with no white line in the middle. The species of Psammophis have this white line and they have different patterns on the head. From what I can see of the head, Psammophis trinasalis is the best match. Posted 11 years ago

The fork-marked sand snake is an African species described by WERNER, 1902. Although venomous is not dangerous to man. Likely to have an average lifespan of 10 years.
