  1. Not very good odds, interesting though. These days I suppose we just go to the market expecting to buy what we need and grumble if that is unavailable or the price has gone up. We can be so far removed from the source that we do not stop to think of the reasons why or the hardships that farmers and other producers can face. A simple basic food such as this can be a complete lifeline for one, for a family or for a whole village. Thank you, perhaps we all need a little wake up call once in a while! Posted 11 years ago
    1. Totally agree with you. The process of grocery shopping is far too abstract nowadays, I really have no idea where things are coming from, how they're made, and what injustice was done to produce them at such a prize.

One does not even have to move to developing countries to see such prize squeezing. As an example, in the Netherlands the entire food industry is in the hands of about 3 corporations. Although they are competitors they actually collaborate as it comes to purchasing goods from suppliers, for example farmers. As a result, farmers have no choice but to be squeezed, as they can't offer their products to anybody else.

  2. The plant is in very bad shape, do you know what is causing the problem? Posted 11 years ago
    1. It is because of the rain. In Bali, we plant tomato in an open farmland, not in a greenhouse. Once the rain is too much, harvest becomes so hard and the price of the tomato will raise. One or two weeks difference in planting time, could bring a total different result. In tropical country, especially in mountainous area , we cannot really predict the rain. Posted 11 years ago

The tomato is the edible, often red, berry of the nightshade ''Solanum lycopersicum'', commonly known as a tomato plant. The species originated in western South America. The Nahuatl word ''tomatl'' gave rise to the Spanish word ''tomate'', from which the English word ''tomato'' derived. Its use as a cultivated food may have originated with the indigenous peoples of Mexico. The Spanish encountered the tomato from their contact with the Aztec during the Spanish colonization of the Americas and brought.. more
