People always ask me what wildlife I enjoy photographing the most. The answer is almost always birds. They're a lot bolder than you'd think, but somewhat easily scared off. You really have to take your pictures with care, which sometimes means being incredibly patient and waiting for that opportune moment to get the best shot. I had been trying to get a good shot of this beautiful Cardinal for weeks but just could not approach one without it flying away. One day out of the blue one flew up and perched not more than a couple of feet away. Photography is a spontaneous art indeed.

The Northern Cardinal is a North American bird in the genus "Cardinalis"; it is also known colloquially as the redbird or common cardinal. It can be found in southern Canada, through the eastern United States from Maine to Texas and south through Mexico. It is found in woodlands, gardens, shrublands, and swamps.
