For a time the glacier's southward movement was balanced against the glacier's melt resulting in the deposition of sand and gravel, sort of a massive conveyor belt effect. At times big chunks of ice remained for a while as the sand and gravel accumulated around them creating what today we refer to as 'kettle lakes'. This one is fed primarily by ground water and it's level fluctuates. Last year the water level dropped, exposing muddy flats ripe for new life. I was fascinated by this field of blossoms.
