  1. Google and patience ( a lot of patience)! Easiest starting point is 'dragonfly, India' but that gives you a list on wiki as long as your arm of the species in India. You can narrow it down by searching 'dragonflies Maharashtra' then you get more sites with lists and photos nearer to where yours was spotted. Then it is a case of patiently trawling through everything until you find something similar, then you can narrow your search down further. You can of course try identification by its actual physical appearance; dragonflies, damselflies etc. all have their own distinguishing features but then you enter the realms of darters, skimmers, dropwings etc. etc. and unless you have a real interest in odonata it can get very complex. Personally I find it easier to just look at Google images for my area and assume that someone else somewhere has a similar photo. Alternatively, you buy a book! That is what I am doing and have built up quite a nice collection now. Posted 11 years ago
    1. Great tips, Claire. I too always start out with the type of species and location in Google image search. For example "beetle Germany". If the species has a distinct color or attribute, I throw that in as well, for example "yellow bird Tanzania". Posted 11 years ago
  2. The above tips are very useful, but in this particular case I use 2 books on dragonflies of India, which are freely available and links are posted in the JD species identification guide where you can also find useful sites for other groups of species http://www.jungledragon.com/species/guide

When I find a match I try to search the scientific name and cross check from a few references that look reliable. You should always make sure that your location is within the distribution range of the species. There may be similarly looking species in other countries or even continents, but that would not be the correct ID.

I have already suggested an ID for this one
