  1. Just so you know have not given up on the fungi challenge! Posted 11 years ago
    1. Thanks! According to Wikipedia...

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tremella

...South Africa is home to a single Jelly fungus:

Tremella microspora — (South Africa) host Stereum spp

Whilst that may not be 100% proof for identification, there's another way to narrow it down. These fungi are a parasite fungus, so they're always attached to a host fungus. If you know the host, it may limit the jelly options :)

      1. Thank you for that Ferdy, I did actually check this one out but it appears the host is another type of fungus and this one is straight onto the wood. I will try to take another look at the host to see if I can work out what it is. Posted 11 years ago
  2. I got some help with this one, I was even given its name in Afrikaans.. Hekse-botter, Geel Jellieswam.
It was also found on a fairly new piece of fallen wood and appeared after some heavy rain which ties in with the species description.

"Tremella mesenterica" is a common jelly fungus in the Tremellaceae family of the Agaricomycotina. It is most frequently found on dead but attached and on recently fallen branches, especially of angiosperms, as a parasite of wood decay fungi in the genus "Peniophora".
