Endangered bogong moth
The past few days, the house porch has been filled with tens of these moths during daylight hours. It has been really good to see, given that they are endangered. Years ago, not just the porch, but the whole house would be covered in them.
They are currently on their migratory path to the alpine areas of Victoria. These moths are an icon of Australian wildlife due to their historical role as an important food source for First Nations people.
Wingspan around 50 mm.

The bogong moth is a temperate species of night-flying moth, notable for its biannual long-distance seasonal migrations towards and from the Australian Alps, similar to the diurnal monarch butterfly. During the autumn and winter it is found in southern Queensland, western New South Wales, western Victoria, and also in South and Western Australia.
