  1. Could it be this...

It appears the hoof fungus comes in a variety of different colours and forms, so possibly??

    1. I had the same thought. Although it may not look exactly the same as reference photos, in the world of fungi that doesn't mean its not the same species. Posted 11 years ago
  2. Thank you both for the suggestions. I looked at the Fomes and Ganodermas, but I couldn't find a good match. I am not sure what species of tree it is. Looking at the trees in the back it should be some kind of deciduous tree, either beech, alder or something else.
It could be a Fomitopsis pinicola, which sometimes grows on deciduous trees. There's a similarly looking specimen here.

''Fomitopsis pinicola'', in English sometimes known as Red Banded Polypore, is a polypore mushroom of the genus ''Fomitopsis''. The species is common throughout the temperate Northern hemisphere. An alternative binomial name is ''Fomes pinicola''.
