Calycomyza flavinotum
The larva exited the mine on 8/21/25. I put it in a small jar with a few cm of moist soil, the Eutrochium leaf, and a small piece of paper towel. The leafmine already had a hole in it when I collected it, but I'm not sure why -- unless more than one larva was initially in the mine (multiple mines coalescing ).
Host: Eutrochium sp.
It was fun to watch the larva because it would curl its body and then pop up in the air. I had to keep it covered so as to not lose it. Video:

"Calycomyza flavinotum" is a species of leaf miner fly. It creates whitish blotch-shaped mines on the leaves of "Ageratina altissima", "Arctium minus", "Eupatorium" spp., "Eutrochium maculatum", and "Eutrochium purpureum", all flowering plants in the sunflower family.
