They have been so vicious and numerous this summer that I have taken to using my flash diffuser as a deer fly swatter.

  1. They do look kind of intimidating! Posted one month ago
    1. They have painful bites because of their scissor-like mouthparts. They basically slash and then slurp. I didn't get many bites, but they are incredibly annoying -- buzzing around your head, divebombing, etc. They are hard to deter because they are persistent and will follow you a long distance. And, they couldn't care less about bug spray. Do you have many issues with them in the Netherlands? Posted one month ago
      1. No, at least in the places I visit I'm never bothered by horseflies, hardly ever seen one. I do have friends that keep horses and that's a different story. Posted one month ago
        1. Horseflies leave you alone because you're so tall that they assume you are a tree. Posted one month ago
