Red-tailed Hawk - Buteo jamaicensis I came upon this hawk at the edge of a coastal forest. It was in the middle of breakfast and appeared to be slurping intestines like spaghetti.<br />

  1. Big breakfast it seems! Any idea what it was? Posted one month ago
    1. I don't know. It seemed to be a big meal. I watched it for 10-15 minutes as it ate and it tolerated me, but I didn't want to scare it off by getting any closer. There was a meadow adjacent to the forest, so maybe it was a rabbit? It looked too big to be a small rodent. Posted one month ago

The red-tailed hawk is a bird of prey, one of three species colloquially known in the United States as the "chickenhawk," though it rarely preys on standard sized chickens. It breeds throughout most of North America, from western Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies, and is one of the most common buteos in North America.
