  1. Very interesting species and location, Jessabella! I remember seeing a documentary about this species, where a wildlife reported was spending months amongst these baboons to study their complex social system. How accessible was this travel? Posted 11 years ago
    1. It was quite a difficult place to access as the Ethiopian government are trying to make the part of the Simien Mountains we accessed a nature reserve. We had to have a driver to take us up the mountain, a scout and a tour guide. But it was well worth it, the Geladas are amazing creatures with a very complex social system and interesting lives. You just have to watch out for the leopards! Posted 11 years ago

The gelada , sometimes called the gelada baboon, is a species of Old World monkey found only in the Ethiopian Highlands, with large populations in the Semien Mountains. ''Theropithecus'' is derived from the Greek root words for "beast-ape." Like its close relatives the baboons , it is largely terrestrial, spending much of its time foraging in grasslands.
