Australian Owlet Nightjar I have been visiting this remote property for over 20 years and I have only ever encounted one of these Owlets once. As it was dark and trying to use the car lights to get a good shot I only managed a couple before it disappeared and I have not seen one again since. The Australian Owlet-nightjar is a nocturnal bird found in open woodland across Australia and in southern New Guinea. It is colloquially known as "Moth Owl". It is the most common of the owlet-nightjars, and the best known of this secretive family.
