Mecistogaster modesta, Leticia, Colombia

A hideous photo because it was severely underexposed due to the large distance. I'm posting it anyway because of how remarkable Mecistogaster species are. Enormous, and they move like a helicopter:

I'm sure there's a reason for it, but that abdomen seems so inefficient. Maybe an extra long digestive tract helps them absorb more nutrients. Oh, and "hideous" is a massive exaggeration. ;P Posted 5 months ago

  I too wonder about the reason. This does not look like a case of exaggerated features for the sake of courtship. Sorry, but the photo is truly terrible. I've seen species from this genus 3 times in my life and in all cases failed to produce a good photo because they got out of reach. Cursed! Posted 5 months ago
