A Sloth Bear
This bear was digging at the roots to search for insects and ants. When we arrived at the scene, it looked up for a while and started again.
These are very dangerous. There are instance of gruesome attacks on humans who accidentally strayed near them, even when not provoked. The seem to focus there attack on forehead and can rip it apart. I have heard horror stories of such attacks.

The sloth bear is a nocturnal insectivorous species of bears found wild within the Indian Subcontinent. The sloth bear evolved from ancestral brown bears during the Pleistocene and shares features found in insect-eating mammals through convergent evolution. The population isolated in Sri Lanka is considered as a subspecies.
