Mantled Howler Monkey (Alouatta palliata) After many hours driving my friend and I arrived at our pretty remote base in Costa Rica at dusk, set our belongings down and immediately headed to what sounded like a running stream nearby.
Making our way slowly across difficult terrain alongside the stream, little did we know what lay in wait for us immediately above our heads.
One mighty howl later and the presence of this male Mantled Howler Monkey became all too obvious.
Thankfully, were not his concern, because he was in fact beginning to settle for the night and dusk is one of the timesof the day when he's most likely to live up to his name.
The mantled howler, or golden-mantled howling monkey, is a species of howler monkey, a type of New World monkey, from Central and South America. It is one of the monkey species most often seen and heard in the wild in Central America. It takes its "mantled" name from the long guard hairs on its sides.
