A Great Grey Owl! A fellow birder on our island phoned to let me know that there was a Great Grey Owl in his yard. It didn’t take us long to pack up the cameras and go! I was a little concerned that after driving the 20 minutes it would be gone. Needless to say I was not the only person to get photos of this magnificent bird. A lucky day for us all! The great grey owl or great gray owl is a very large owl, documented as the world's largest species of owl by length. It is distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, and it is the only species in the genus ''Strix'' found in both Eastern and Western Hemispheres. In some areas it is also called Phantom of the North, cinereous owl, spectral owl, Lapland owl, spruce owl, bearded owl, and sooty owl.
