  1. Not the best photo, but a great encounter! This is the most endangered endemic bird of PR, with fewer than 100 wild birds. This is pretty much the only area where you have a good chance of seeing them, or at least hearing them in the evening as they over the forest on the way to their evening roosts. I was going to be 3 days in the area but right on my first visit, about half an hour before sunset, through the chorus of coqui frogs, I heard some calls in the distance. As I walked along and I could hear them closer my hopes rose as it sounded like they were in the direction the path was taking me. And sure enough I finally found this pair high up in a dead tree, where they perched directly above me for about 15 minutes before another pair flew past and they took off with them. The Puerto Rican amazon is the only extant parrot endemic to the archipelago of Puerto Rico, and belongs to the Neotropical genus "Amazona". Measuring 28–30 cm, the bird is a predominantly green parrot with a red forehead and white rings around the eyes. Its closest relatives are believed to be the Cuban amazon and the Hispaniolan amazon.
