  1. Not the prettiest of the PR endemics but one of the most interesting, as it's the sole member of its family! It's only recent molecular studies that have shown that some birds of the Greater Antilles which were previously lumped with widespread families are in fact evolutionarily quite distinct!
    Cuba has another endemic family of two "warblers", and Hispaniola (the island shared by Haiti and Dominican Republic) has an incredible three endemic bird families!

The Puerto Rican tanager is a small passerine bird endemic to the archipelago of Puerto Rico. It is the only member of the genus "Nesospingus" and has historically been placed in the tanager family, but recent studies indicate it as either belonging in its own family Nesospingidae or as being a member of Phaenicophilidae.
