Yes Ferdy, and unfortunately this year at the Chambal Sanctuary it was reported that the Mugger population is growing and that this is posing a serious threat to the gharials there; as although they are smaller than gharials they are more agile and this allows them to win confrontations with gharials. Muggers also have higher genetic diversity there, which I read indicates they are successful colonisers, again to the detriment of the gharials. The gharials are losing the battle but mostly because of human intervention. Posted 8 months ago

The gharial is a crocodilian of the family Gavialidae, native to the Indian Subcontinent. The global gharial population is estimated at less than 235 individuals, which are threatened by loss of riverine habitat, depletion of fish resources and use of fishing nets.
