Moorland Chat ssp sordida on Tufa on the Sanetti Plateau
There are 4 ssp of this species and this is the Ethiopia high moorland sub-species P s sordida, which was seen on a block of tufa on the open Sanetti Plateau at well over 4000m.
The 2nd ssp is P s ernesti which is found in the highlands to the extreme east of Uganda and in those in western and central Kenya. The 3rd ssp is P s olimotiensis which is found on the high altitude moorlands of northern Tanzania, the crater highlands and the final ssp is P s hypospodia which is found in Northern Tanzania on the Mount Kilimanjaro moorlands.
The moorland chat is a species of songbird in the Old World flycatcher family. It is endemic to north-east Africa where it is common in its habitat. It lives at high altitudes on moors and grassland, usually above 3,400 m, but can live as low as 2,100 m. It has a short tail and long legs.
