
Creosote midge gall or Asphondylia auripila on cresosote bush
This gall on the creosote bush is caused by a small non descript fly or midge. When first created by the midge, the ball is all green with small leaf florets. As the weather drys it out it all turns brown and crusty.

The "Asphondylia auripila" group consists of 15 closely related species of gall-inducing flies which inhabit creosote bush. They have partitioned the plant ecologically with different gall midge species inhabiting the leaves, stems, buds, and flowers of creosote bush.
