Donkey Orchid

Donkey Orchid (Diuris), Kangaroo Island, Sout Australia, Australia

  1. Diuris are called 'Donkey Orchids' because of their prominent petals, which protrude from the top of the flower like a donkey's ears. The name, Diuris, meaning 'double tailed', describes the long narrow, lateral sepals which extend down, under the labelum (lip) and are often crossed. There are over about 50 species of these beautiful orchids, which are rather hard to discriminate. Considering the date it was captured (September) I guess it is the Common or Wallflower Donkey Orchid (Diuris orientis or Diuris corymbosa).
