Large red-belted clearwing (Synanthedon culiciformis) I would have completely overlooked this beauty and dismissed it as yet another hoverfly if it hadn&#039;t been for my parter, who has a passion for clearwing moths.<br />
On a hike in Piemont where we already had spotted a sizable number of not-so-common species, it happened that on our way down, my partner suddenly got very excited and called me to come quickly. Luckily, this fine specimen sat still long enough for me to take its picture. "Synanthedon culiciformis", known as the large red-belted clearwing, is a moth of the family Sesiidae. It is found in the Palearctic and Nearctic realms. The larvae feed on various deciduous trees, especially birch but also alder.
