  1. A distant, single photo of this lovely bird. They breed in the vast steppes of central Hungary and even if seen, are usually very remote. Several years in a row I pass through Hungary on my way to central Europe and look out for them, but only this year a bird surprised me in flight. Despite the bad photo, I'm glad to have already photographed this species. Posted 11 months ago, modified 11 months ago

The great bustard is in the bustard family, the only member of the genus "Otis". It breeds in southern and central Europe, and across temperate Asia. European populations are mainly resident, but Asian birds move further south in winter. Portugal and Spain now contain about 60% of the world's population.
