Mountain Goat I came across this mountain goat while hiking in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. This picture is of the male of the family; he was accompanied by a female and a kid. When he saw me, he began walking purposefully toward me while snorting. Given that I was perilously close to the edge of a long drop-off, I snapped this picture and beat a hasty retreat. The mountain goat, also known as the Rocky Mountain goat, is a large-hoofed mammal found only in North America. Despite its vernacular name, it is not a member of "Capra", the genus that includes the wild goat, "Capra aegagrus", from which the domestic goat is derived. A subalpine to alpine species, it is a sure-footed climber commonly seen on cliffs and ice.
