American Lady on Stella de Oro

  1. Bugguide identifies this as American Lady which is slightly different than Painted Lady. Posted one year ago
    1. Looks like "American Lady" and "American Painted Lady" are synonyms for the same species: Vanessa virginiensis.
"Painted lady" is indeed a different species: Vanessa cardui.

It's usually best to use the binomial (latin) name when using the identification feature, it's more reliable, less chance of confusion due to ambiguous common names.

"Vanessa cardui" is the most widespread of all butterfly species. It is commonly called the painted lady, or formerly in North America the cosmopolitan.
