European paper wasp, Heesch, Netherlands
This wasp makes a regular visit to the mini pond in our garden to re-hydrate. In Dutch we call it the "French field wasp" which hints at its native range. The species has been expanding North, and is very successful at it for several reasons. It's a food generalist, has a short development cycle, isn't typically targeted by birds. Further, it has far less conflicts with people as it's not interested in our sugary food and drinks, unlike other European wasps.
Fun fact about this species is the lazy flight where it hangs it legs during flight, instead of retracting them.

The European paper wasp is one of the most common and well-known species of social wasps in the genus" Polistes". Its diet is more diverse than that of most "Polistes" species, making it superior over many others during the shortage of resources.
