Cephalanthus_occidentalis_2024-07-07 SW Michigan USA Growing in the field behind our house, in a low area, near a lake. Usually we find these actually in the water at lands edge. If you look closely you will see numerous tiny insects, frozen here and there in the 50 or so sequential photos used to create this shot.<br />

  1. Deep zooming into this shot is amazing. Are the insects thrips? Springtails? Posted one year ago
    1. I really don't know my insects. But I did what I've been doing a lot of lately- asking the helpful iNaturalist AI for a suggestion. It says Subfamily Thripinae. https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/450138-Thripinae

      And I guess if they were springtails they would be springing around- which these weren't. Skulking more like it.
