  1. Just wow. This photo is incredible in many ways. First, it is a species introduction, and very well captured. Second, it is in a remarkable place. Just yesterday I was discussing with another community member what a pity it is that we can't freely explore Central Africa due to the safety situation, whilst it has incredible wildlife. And here you come in and post the first Congo photo. Posted 11 years ago
  2. That is pretty magnificent! I was at the Rwanda side of Virunga way back in 1989 and since then, nothing has matched the thrill of seeing one of these incredible gorillas in the wild. Unfortunately all my photos were taken in those dark days before digital and are currently getting dusty in someones loft!
Ferdy, I believe Virunga is still safely accessible...your next trip???

  3. Thanks for the kind words. Speaking of safety, I never felt in any danger while I was there. But I knew some others who were detained by Congolese forces for bribes. And General Laurent Nkunda's forces invaded the park around a week after I was there. So visiting was a little bit of a gamble in retrospect. But that was in 2007. I'm not sure what the situation on the ground is now. Posted 11 years ago

The mountain gorilla is one of the two subspecies of the eastern gorilla. There are two populations. One is found in the Virunga volcanic mountains of Central Africa, within three National Parks. The other is found in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
