Australian icon: redback spider detail Highlighting the dynamic markings and colour on the abdomen of a juvenile female redback.

These iconic Australian spiders are to me not only beautiful but fascinating with their intriguing lifecycle and behaviours.

The bright colours often serve to alert to danger in the natural world, possibly serving as a warning to potential predators ...do not disturb!

If summers are hot and dry which they prefer, I get to observe many, as I leave out special areas constructed of materials that they like to inhabit.

Unfortunately, they remain much maligned and misunderstood by the general public.
The redback spider is a species of venomous spider indigenous to Australia. It is a member of the cosmopolitan genus "Latrodectus", the widow spiders. The adult female is easily recognised by her spherical black body with a prominent red stripe on the upper side of her abdomen and an hourglass-shaped red/orange streak on the underside.
