When I put the Lightroom image side by side on screen with the JungleDragon image in my browser they are remarkably similar. The color transitions in the jpg are not quite as subtle and it looks like the jpg conversion actually does sharpen the file somewhat- so even though the jpg seems a little over-sharpened compared with the Lightroom image and the color is a little grainy, the result is really quite good, especially considering how much smaller the file is- <15MB vs 100MB+ on my hard drive. This is due to JPEG compression not being linear. Only below about 65% compression do visual artifacts get very strong and noticeable. The artifacts mostly affect tonality, not sharpness.
Another fun fact: browsers have algorithms that downscale images to fit them into a smaller box, say a thumbnail. These algorithms are opinionated and can differ between browsers. Posted one year ago
