The first nymphalid specimens that can be spotted in the beginning of the year are individuals that wake from hibernation, and the generations of May-June (in portugal) are quite difficult to spot because they manage to make estival pause... The Blackleg Tortoiseshell or Large Tortoiseshell is a butterfly of the family Nymphalidae. Although it looks very like the Small Tortoiseshell, it is more closely related to the Camberwell Beauty. It is found in Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia.
