I sliced the stem below the section division to show the corrugated nature of the stem. The stems are hollow except for a narrow plug at each division and the stem walls are thin, relying on the corrugation to stiffen them up enough to support the plant's weight.
The pinched appearance of the stem at the slice is an illusion, an unfortunate by-product of perspective change due to the movement of the camera during the focus stacking process. The stem is not actually tapered at this point.
