Prickly Lettuce or Lactuca serriola Very common in the dry rocks and gravel in the greater Phoenix, Arizona area. They say it can be eaten but I would have to be near starvation to give this a try. "Lactuca serriola" is an annual or biennial plant in the tribe Cichorieae within the family Asteraceae. It has a slightly fetid odor and is commonly considered a weed of orchards, roadsides and field crops. It is the closest wild relative of cultivated lettuce.
