Pholiota_2024-05-06 SW Michigan USA We found a large fruiting of these on the face of a sawed tree trunk. The larger ones were 4 to 5 cm wide, the ones photographed here were 0.5 to 1.5 cm wide.
I'm pretty sure of the genus (Pholiota) but hesitant to take a stab at the species ID
1. I think you are correct with genus Pholiota. The species as far as I can work out might be Pholiota kodiakensis ,but not sure as its distribution seems to be to far north. Posted one year ago, modified one year ago
1. Thank you for working on this. I have a few more photos of this here: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/214201400 Posted one year ago
1. Pholiota squarrosa is distribution wise more likely. It would be good to have a fully developed cap image. Posted one year ago, modified one year ago
1. We’ll go back today. They are between the base of an esker and a wetland, in one of the few areas around here that haven’t been logged in a long time, maybe never. Beautiful big beech, maple and tulip trees. Posted one year ago
2. I put two photos from today up here: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/214458817 Posted one year ago
1. That looks better and I would say that it is (Pholiota aurivella),
It appearantly is found also in Australia along the east coast.

''Pholiota aurivella'' is a species of fungus in the family Strophariaceae that is found in native forest of New Zealand and in the United States. It is frequently found in the American West and Southwest, especially in late Summer and Fall. It is sticky or slimy when moist and grows in clusters on live or dead trees.
