Prickly Pear or Opuntia engelmannii flower with bonus Hemiptera insect
I rarely see these little hidden bonus insects until I start doing post and then I discover them. The insect is in the Hemiptera family or true bugs. The true bug is spotted towards the bottom right on a flower bud.
"Opuntia engelmannii" is a prickly pear common across the south-central and Southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The nomenclatural history of this species is somewhat complicated due to the varieties, as well as its habit of hybridizing with "Opuntia phaeacantha".
