Although many turtles spend much of their lives underwater, all turtles breathe air and must surface at regular intervals to refill their lungs. They may also spend much of their life on land. Aquatic respiration in Australian freshwater turtles is currently being studied. Some species have large cloacal cavities that are lined with many finger like projections. These projections, called papillae, have a rich blood supply, as well as to increase the surface area of the cloaca. Turtles can take up dissolved oxygen from water using these papillae, in much the same way that fish use gills to breathe.
The loggerhead sea turtle, or loggerhead, is an oceanic turtle distributed throughout the world. It is a marine reptile, belonging to the family Cheloniidae. The average loggerhead measures around 90 centimeters long when fully grown, although larger specimens of up to 270 centimeters have been discovered.
