Headless Tau Emperor (Aglia tau)
During today's hike along the riparian forest habitat on the banks of the Mangfall river, close to Miesbach, we saw many of these diurnal saturniids, endlessly prowling their habitat in search of a mate. Since they rarely ever sit down, getting a picture is hard.
Well, this specific individual had apparently just gotten its head bitten off (presumably by some bird). Its legs were still twitching. But all in all, it was rather cooperative in sitting still and posing for a photo…
"Aglia tau", the tau emperor, is a moth of the family Saturniidae. It is found in Europe. The species was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of "Systema Naturae".
