Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin); Sacha Lodge, Ecuador I had been reading up on Neo-tropical ecology before our visit to Ecuador, and the Hoatzin was mentioned as one very unique example, so I really hoped to see one. And lo and behold, the first sight that greeted us at Sacha Lodge, after a tour by boat down Napo river, a hike through the forest and another tour by canoe) was a Hoatzin! The hoatzin is a species of tropical bird found in swamps, riparian forests, and mangroves of the Amazon and the Orinoco basins in South America. It is the only extant species in the genus "Opisthocomus" which is the only extant genus in the Opisthocomidae family under the order of Opisthocomiformes.
