  1. Easily the highlight of the southern Peru extension to my Chilean trip! We spent hours looking for them in the high desert, and finally found 5 of them together (out of about 70 that roam the altiplano of Moquegua, and about 300 in all of southern Peru). Posted one year ago

Darwin's rhea or the lesser rhea (Rhea pennata) is a large flightless bird, the smaller of the two extant species of rheas. It is found in the Altiplano and Patagonia in South America.
