  1. Always a great day when I get to add a species to my owl collection! Even though Glaucidium species tend to look very much alike, they make up for it in sheer spunk and the fact that they are partly diurnal, which makes them reasonably easy to find.
I saw one on my very first day, but it was not at all cooperative and I spent half an hour following it as it moved from tree to tree, always perching in dense foliage, and when it finally deigned to land on an open perch I had to clamber up a scree slope just to get a backlit record shot. The second one I saw on a perfect low perch in beautiful evening light... just on the edge of a big park in Santiago as I had gone out for a run, so no photos there!
And finally third time was the charm! I called this one on the edge of La Campana national park (which was unfortunately closed due to the wildfires) and it quickly turned up, accompanied by the usual entourage of pissed off songbirds mobbing it. Light wasn't on my side but at least it allowed for nice close views!
I'll have to go back for my other owl target that got away...

  3. What a shot! Intimate and grumpy, it's the way of the owl. Posted one year ago
    1. Haha indeed! Pygmy-owls in particular always look really pissed off. One day I really hope to see the Ural Owl, which probably has the gentlest face/expression out of any owl I can think of. Posted one year ago
