Draparnauds Glass snail (Oxychilus draparnaudi)
There are four British species of glass snail and measuring around 15mm this is the largest.
Glass snails are named after the appearance of their shiny, fragile and translucent shells when alive, although O. draparnaudi has a waxier shell than others in the genus
Given their slamm size, glass snails are effective predators and almost exclusively carnivorous, feeding on other snails and slugs, their eggs, earthworms and dead insects.
Originally inhabitants of humid deciduous forests, in the UK they are more likely to be found under leaf litter or stones in gardens and other anthropogenous areas, such as green houses and compost heaps for which their flattened shells are perfect.
"Oxychilus draparnaudi", Draparnaud's glass snail, is a species of small land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Oxychilidae, the glass snails.
