
The moustached turca is a passerine bird which is endemic to Chile and belongs to the tapaculo family Rhinocryptidae. Common names of this species include "Turco" or "Turca". It is a terrestrial bird that burrows its nest on steep hillsides and uses flight for short distances.

Chile is notorious for having the flashiest members of the tapaculo family, as they are significantly more colorful, three times the size of the normal ones and much more likely to be seen out in the open. This one even occasionally runs along roadsides in the early morning.
As it turns out, this was literally the first bird I photographed on the morning of my first day, which I took to be a great omen :) Posted one year ago
