Pileated Woodpecker - Dryocopus pileatus A minute before I took this picture, there were 3 pileated woodpeckers on this stump! Unfortunately, they were scared off when I opened my door. But, this one came back. I have photographed them on this stump before, so it must have some good bugs. <br />

  1. Amazing how close you get to them, over her woodpeckers are so nervous. Posted one year ago
    1. I just stuck my lens out the door to get the shot, so the woodpecker didn't really see me. This stump is right in my front yard. Although, I have noticed that many woodpeckers are quite bold and more easily approached than some other birds. Posted one year ago

The Pileated Woodpecker is a very large North American woodpecker, roughly crow-sized, inhabiting deciduous forests in eastern North America, the Great Lakes, the boreal forests of Canada, and parts of the Pacific coast. It is also the largest woodpecker in the United States, excepting the possibly extinct Ivory-billed Woodpecker.
