Purple-Throated Carib Hummingbird Took this photo on the beautiful nature island of Dominica in the Lesser Antilles before Hurricane Maria slammed the island,destroying over 90 percent of the homes there. When I look through my images, I have to wonder if this species still exists. Does anyone know? Purple-Throated Carib Hummingbird

Took this photo on the beautiful nature island of Dominica in the Lesser Antilles before Hurricane Maria slammed the island,destroying over 90 percent of the homes there. When I look through my images, I have to wonder if this species still exists. Does anyone know?

    Photo was taken in the garden of the very sweet little resort where we stayed. That place definitely no longer exists. I blended the background to make the bird more prominent, so the bokeh is invented but the bird is authentic. Posted one year ago

    I saw the species in Martinique last month, they're doing well over there. And looking on the eBird platform, they're still regularly seen there as well :) Posted one year ago

      Thanks, Thibaud! I had not looked at Ebird but that's a great way to determine status. The accounts of hurricane recovery on Dominica made the island sadly sound as not progressing much. Posted one year ago

The Purple-throated carib

The purple-throated carib is a species of hummingbird in the subfamily Polytminae. It is resident on most of the islands of the Lesser Antilles and has occurred as a vagrant both further north and south.
